What Is Road Tuning

02.02

00:00 Road tuning as its name implies is the process of tuning an engine management system on the road rather than on a dyno.
00:08 There are some advantages and disadvantages to doing this.
00:11 The most obvious disadvantage is that we have no feedback to tell us how we're doing.
00:16 We don't get the benefit of the Dyno's screen telling us if we have 400 horsepower or 450 horsepower.
00:23 Some of the changes we may be chasing are too small to reliably feel.
00:28 Safety is also another downside.
00:31 There's no denying that tuning a high-powered car on the road is less safe than on a dyno.
00:36 Although, you could argue it is a bunch more fun.
00:40 There are also some significant advantages though, and these are often overlooked even by professional tuners.
00:47 The dyno's a powerful tool, but unless you have access to an OEM dyno cell with controlled air temperature it's impossible to replicate the real world conditions you'll see on the road or racetrack.
01:00 Since we don't drive or race our cars on dynos what we really care about is the engine performance on the road, so, road tuning is a natural choice.
01:09 In particular, I often find that when I take a car out on the road that has been tuned on the dyno, I often need to make small adjustments to the AFR, remove some ignition timing to avoid detonation, or adjust boost control settings on turbo engines to ensure safe and consistent tune.
01:27 With this in mind, you may ask why we'd bothered dyno tuning in the first place.
01:32 While making small tweaks to a tune on the road isn't too difficult, tuning a car from scratch does require a bit more work, and this will naturally take longer to do on the road.
01:43 As I have previously mentioned, we also have no feedback from the dyno, so optimising our ignition timing is more difficult.
01:52 This course is going to give you a process to follow to ensure you get the best results possible for road tuning your car.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
