00:00 - I'm Andre and I'd like to welcome you to HPA's WinOLS training course.
00:05 WinOLS is a binary editor that's become a popular option for finding, defining and modifying maps inside a factory ECU.
00:13 WinOLS was originally released in the early '90s by EVC at which time it was the only reasonably priced commercial binary editor available.
00:23 Professional tuners in Europe quickly adopted this platform and it's become the most widely used piece of software for tuning European vehicles.
00:31 Since its release, it's evolved signifcantly and EVC have integrated and developed many plug in modules to assist the tuner, such as DAMOS import modules, language translators, scripting functions, an online database search, a reseller platform, specific tool integration, live tuning, using the OLS 300, factory file decryption filters and check sum modules.
00:55 Now don't worry if a bunch of those terms just went straight above your head, this course is here to explain everything I just mentioned and more.
01:04 WinOLS is capable of working with any ECU, however it is most often used for the tuning of European vehicles from the likes of Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedez Benz and BMW as well as exotics from the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren just to name a few.
01:21 This is a large market of vehicles that spans a wide range of model years as well as a wide range of ECU manufacturers and ECU models, meaning that this is not a one size fits all solution and requires some knowledge that is specific to your individual application.
01:37 Traditionally this software has been difficult and expensive to learn to use and there is a lot of secrecy around the inner workings of late model ECU remapping from those who are already proficient in it.
01:49 This has meant it's difficult for those new to the process to learn and get reliable answers to their specific questions.
01:56 To add to the challenge, the skillset and the knowledge needed to find and define maps within a raw binary file, is quite unique and very different from the skillset needed to tune a standalone ECU or to reflash an ECU with traditional software options from the likes of HP Tuners, EcuTek and COBB for example.
02:17 This means that even some of the best tuners in the industry have struggled to learn the skills required to use WinOLS to its full potential.
02:26 This course seeks to fix this problem and fill in the knowledge void and so we've partnered with James O'Connor from The File Service in Australia to help develop and produce this course, drawing from his decades of knowledge using WinOLS on literally thousands of applications.
02:43 We'll dive deeper into what exactly WinOLS is and how you can utilise it as we move through this course but for now I want to make sure you understand what this course is and just as importantly, what it isn't.
02:56 Within this course, we'll teach you how to use the WinOLS software package in order to find and define maps within the raw binary file.
03:04 You'll also learn how the common factory engine management systems function and the logic flow that occurs within them.
03:11 This is important because in order to find the relevant maps you'll need in order to make tuning changes, you're going to need to understand what maps will be present in the first place.
03:21 You'll learn how to read and write to the ECU and you'll learn about the various options to achieve this, including OBD2, bench, and direct to the PC board.
03:30 And why you would use a particular method over another.
03:34 What we will not cover within this course is the actual tuning process.
03:39 We're making the assumption that the majority of people taking this course are already competent tuners and simply need to understand how to use WinOLS to find and modify the relevant maps needed to achieve a specific tuning result.
03:51 Once you've found the required maps, the tuning process is really no different to any late model reflashing job.
03:58 We will however be including worked examples tuning both petrol and diesel ECUs using OLS within our practical reflash and practical diesel tuning courses.
04:08 You'll find a link to those courses below.
04:10 If you're new to tuning, we'd also recommend you consider our EFI Tuning Fundamentals course and our Understanding AFR course to complete your knowledge.
04:20 Again, these are linked below.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
