There is no one universal option

00:00 - One of the most common questions we get asked is "What software should I used to tune my car?" The answer, however, is a little more complex, and we're going to investigate your options in this section of the course.
00:14 Ultimately, what you used to tune your car will depend on what you're driving, and what you want to do.
00:21 There isn't, unfortunately, any single, universal piece of software that can be used to tune every vehicle on the market, and we need to understand the options available, the pros and cons, and how to decide what's the best option for your situation.
00:39 We need to start by understanding the basic concepts we've already looked at as to how the EFI system functions.
00:48 The key to the operation of any EFI system is the ECU.
00:53 This is the part of the puzzle that makes the tuning decisions related to the fuel and spark delivery and hence, any time we want to adjust the tuning parameters, we're going to need to start here.
01:06 In the past, traditionally when we wanted to optimise the tune, or make tuning changes to that engine, we would have fitted an aftermarket ECU to replace the factory fitted ECU.
01:18 We'll be looking at these in more detail shortly, but essentially this comprises a universal engine management computer that's capable of controlling just about any engine you could think of.
01:31 These days, with modern vehicles becoming much more complex, it's getting harder to remove the factory ECU and fit an aftermarket replacement instead.
01:42 Due to these complexities, it's becoming much more common now to alter the mapping held inside the factory ECU, using a technique called reflashing.
01:52 We're going to cover reflashing shortly too, so don't worry about it for now.
01:58 So, you should be starting to get the picture now that there's more than one way to achieve our aim of making tuning changes and understandably the software you're going to use to make these changes will depend on exactly how you're approaching the task.
02:14 In the next section, we're going to cover your options in a little more detail, so you can make an informed decision on what's right for you.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
