I'm Connor from High Performance Academy, and I'd like to welcome you to our motorsport plumbing course.
00:05 |
If you're involved in motorsport or you're looking to modify your street car, there's a pretty good chance that you're going to need to complete some form of plumbing work, whether that be plumbing a system from scratch or just replacing a damaged line.
00:18 |
Nearly all factory plumbing systems involve a lot of compromises, usually in the interest of a lower price tag for the manufacturer at the sacrifice of performance.
00:28 |
This means that in more demanding situations like motorsport, we're going to run into limitations that could cause much more serious lead on effects.
00:38 |
For example, the plumbing might not be sized for our flow and pressure requirements, which is absolutely critical to our fuel and oil systems.
00:47 |
Or it could be that the materials are just not up to the task for motorsport use, causing reliability issues, prompting the move from rubber hose and hose clamps to AN hose-end fittings and braided lines.
01:00 |
Likewise, brake system compliance resulting in a spongy brake pedal could be addressed through the use of braid reinforced brake hoses.
01:08 |
This is an area that's easily overlooked and as a result, often misunderstood by a lot of enthusiasts.
01:15 |
No one wants to waste time and money in the garage or at a track day chasing leaks or fighting boiling fluids and overheating engines.
01:23 |
So, throughout the upcoming course modules, we're going to go through everything you need to know about motorsport plumbing systems as well as the practical skills required to complete plumbing jobs for performance applications.
01:35 |
Plumbing is a wide topic, covering multiple systems all around the vehicle, all with different functions and considerations.
01:43 |
The systems we'll be focusing on in this course are the intake and charge air, coolant, fuel, oil, braking and power steering systems.
01:52 |
A well designed and constructed plumbing system can increase outright performance while ensuring reliability lap after lap to ensure that you see the podium or at the very least, allow you to spend less time in the pits so you can get the best value from your track days.
02:08 |
Quality plumbing work and materials will stand the test of time and the abuse of motorsport, often proving to be more cost effective in the long run than inferior products that may have had a cheaper initial purchase price.
02:21 |
In this course, we'll begin by covering the fundamentals of each system and the main concepts behind how they function, as well as the material options we have, and considerations around performance, routing, heat management and sizing.
02:36 |
From there we'll cover the main components used in plumbing systems, including those more common in motorsport applications and more detail to better understand how they all work and how we can use them.
02:49 |
With that understanding, we'll move on to develop practical skills that allow you to correctly complete any plumbing work, modifying a current system or designing one from scratch.
03:00 |
Finally we'll discuss some common plumbing issues for each system and how they can be addressed when it comes time to test and tune.
03:08 |
This course won't dive deep into every detail about the core components connected by the plumbing systems, the oil and water pump or radiator for example, but it will teach you everything you need to know about the system as a whole, as well as the skills to connect the items with plumbing that you're going to be able to trust lap after lap.
