Introduction

00:00 - I'm Andre from the High Performance Academy, and I'd like to welcome you to the Practical Engine Building course.
00:05 This course builds on the knowledge presented in our Engine Building Fundamentals course, and assumes you have a thorough understanding of the concepts presented there.
00:16 If you haven't already taken this course, I'd strongly suggest you completing it before proceeding.
00:22 Building or assembling an engine can be an immensely satisfying task for many of us to complete, and performing this work yourself allows you to have complete control over the entire process.
00:34 You'll know exactly what components are inside the engine, where they were sourced from, and what power level and RPM they're capable of supporting.
00:44 If you're prepared to take the time to learn the fundamentals of engine building, practice the practical application of these techniques, and you're patient, you can often produce an end result, that's better than many of the professionally assembled engines available.
01:01 Particularly when it comes to dimensional accuracy and consistency.
01:07 Now perhaps you're a home enthusiast who's contemplating the next step in your project and you'd like to take on the challenge yourself, or maybe you run a performance workshop and would like to bring your engine assembly in house instead of relying on others.
01:23 Either way, this course is going to be perfect for you.
01:27 Engine building is not a particularly difficult task, and it can be easily understood and mastered by most enthusiasts.
01:35 It does however require an understanding of what you're trying to achieve, an eye for detail, and a methodical approach if you want to build engines that will perform as well as expected, providing good power and torque, and most importantly a long service life.
01:52 For the novice engine builder faced with a task of assembling an engine for the first time, this can be a daunting proposition.
02:00 Where do you start? And what order should you proceed? There's obviously a lot of expensive engine components on the line here and if your assembly isn't perfect, then you could be looking at a large repair bill.
02:13 We remove the fear and confusion with the HPA 10 step process which is presented in this course.
02:21 This process breaks the engine assembly down into 10 bite sized tasks.
02:27 Each of these individual tasks is relatively straightforward and quick to complete and before you know it, you'll have a completely assembled engine.
02:35 But more importantly you'll have the confidence that it's been assembled correctly, and that all of the clearances are perfectly suited to your specific application.
02:46 This'll ensure that you don't overlook any critical steps that could end in expensive damage.
02:54 This course is broken down into sections.
02:56 In the first section, we'll discuss the skills you'll need to apply and the steps you'll need to cover in a practical sense to assemble your engine.
03:06 Once you've completed this section of the course, we'll move into our worked example section.
03:12 In this section you'll be able to see the 10 step process being applied from start to finish on a real engine building project.
03:21 Our library of worked examples will be added to as time goes on.
03:26 So if your particular engine isn't covered right now, don't worry, there's a good chance we will be adding it to our library in the future, and you'll get access to any additional worked examples at no cost.
03:40 This course will be focused on four stroke spark ignition engines.
03:44 However we will be learning universal concepts that are not specific to a particular type of engine.
03:52 This means that even if your specific engine of interest is not covered in our worked examples, this course will still be invaluable to you, and all of the information presented will still be applicable, regardless whether you're assembling a 1000 horsepower Mitsubishi 4G63, or completing a factory spec freshen up on a naturally aspirated LS1.
04:16 This course doesn't cover the process of machining an engine block or engine components.
04:23 This work is beyond the realm of the home enthusiast as it requires potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of specialty equipment, as well as extensive experience in how to correctly operate it.
04:36 On this basis, the course assumes that you will be working with an automotive machine shop in order to perform the raw machining of your engine, ready for assembly.
04:47 If you require more information about engine machining, our Engine Building Fundamentals course covers the machining processes that are typically required in a normal engine project.
04:59 And this is valuable information so that you can liase with a machinist about your project, and speak the same language as the machinist.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
