Step 5 - Initial Startup

02.25

00:00 Now we've got to the point of actually starting the car up for the first time, and we're going to show you again just how easy that can be.
00:08 We've got our base fuel table configured with some numbers that we know are going to be probably close enough to get the engine started and running.
00:16 We also now know our ignition timing is close enough.
00:20 All we need to do is crank the car over.
00:23 One thing to keep in mind here is there's a pretty good chance at this point the car isn't going to run smoothly by itself so we may need to use the throttle to keep it running.
00:33 I would be using the throttle to try and keep the engine rpm between about 1,000 and 2,000, maybe around the 1,500 rpm mark.
00:42 So let's just do that now.
00:43 (engine starting) Once we've got the engine running the first thing we want to look at is our lambda here.
00:52 You can see we're actually already pretty good..
00:56 The area I want to be aiming for when I first start up a fresh engine is somewhere between around about point eight five and point nine five.
01:04 While our numbers here are pretty good, there's every chance that yours won't be.
01:10 What I do, we're not trying to tune individual cylinders here, what I do is I highlight a whole block of the numbers around the area the engine is running in.
01:19 You can see that here, and then using in this case the Q and A keys plus Shift we can reduce or increase the fueling as we need to to make changes to the lambda.
01:33 You can see we're going a bit richer there, and I'll pull some fuel out.
01:37 You can see when we're back to point nine five lambda.
01:39 Basically, our start-up point was good enough to get the engine running and idling just by itself without too much trouble.
01:47 I'm using a little bit of throttle just to hold the rpm up.
01:50 You can see as I move around the table the lambda does change a little bit.
01:53 Now during that initial start-up we also want to go to the run-time values display, and if we click on the analog inputs box you can see our battery voltage is sitting at thirteen point seven volts.
02:05 That's something we want to check before we go too far and make sure our charging system is working.
02:11 I've also checked on the dash to make sure that our oil pressure light's gone out and we've got good oil pressure so we know that mechanically the engine's sound.
02:19 That's our start-up. We're done.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
