- I'm Andre from the High Performance Academy and I'd like to welcome you to our Cam Control Tuning course.
00:05 |
The timing of the valve opening and closing events has a significant impact on the operation of our engines and will influence the power, torque, fuel economy and emissions that we can achieve.
00:17 |
In older fixed cam engines we could take advantage of making cam timing changes via vernier adjustable cam gears, allowing the cam timing to be advanced or retarded relative to the crankshaft.
00:30 |
This was beneficial but the cam timing still needed to be selected to optimise performance in a specific RPM range.
00:37 |
As engines became more advanced, we saw the introduction of adjustable cam timing systems such as Nissan's VCT where the cam timing could be switched between 2 extremes while the engine was running.
00:49 |
On the latest crop of performance engines though we're more likely to find continuously variable cam control systems which allow the cam timing to be advanced or regarded anywhere between the system's mechanical limits while the engine is running.
01:04 |
This approach allows the tuner significant freedom to optimise the cam timing to suit his or her specific requirements.
01:12 |
While there's no doubting the potential results from adjusting your cam timing, regardless of the specifics of the way these adjustments are made, it can often be daunting, even for experienced tuners to know how to approach the tuning process.
01:27 |
This course is designed to address these concerns, giving you a thorough understanding of the different styles of cam control system, the theory behind their operation as well as a simple 5 step process that you can apply to your own tuning, ensuring that you get the best results in the minimum amount of time.
01:45 |
This course is broken into 2 sections.
01:47 |
In the first section we start with the background theory behind camshaft and variable cam operation as well as the system requirements and the control strategies which are used.
01:58 |
We then cover the practical skills that you'll need to understand and master to tune a variety of different continuously variable, switched and vernier cam wheel equipped engines, followed by a simple step by step process you can apply regardless of the engine.
02:15 |
In the second section of the course, we move into our library of worked examples where you can watch the HPA 5 step process being applied from start to finish on a real tuning job.
02:26 |
In this library, you'll be able to see the tuning process being applied on a range of different engines and different ECU platforms to give you confidence when it comes time to complete your own tuning.
02:38 |
Our library of worked examples will be added to as time goes on so if your particular engine or ECU isn't covered right now, don't worry, there's a good chance we'll be adding it our library in the future and you'll get access to any additional worked examples at no cost.
02:54 |
It's important to mention that this course doesn't cover the process of physically installing or degreeing the cams in the first place and it assumes you're either working with a standard cam control engine or cams that have been correctly degreed during the installation process where the clearances have been verified.
03:13 |
If you want to learn more about this process then you'll benefit from our How to Degree a Cam course.
