Introduction: VW Golf

04.51

00:00 - In this worked example, we're going to be applying the HPA 6 step process to our MK5 Volkswagen Golf GTI, this is a 2008 model.
00:10 Now you have already seen a number of examples through the body of the course being used in conjunction with our MK5 Golf so a lot of this will double up on some of the information already provided, however given that we are now going through a complete worked example, we will be diving into a lot more detail, thoroughly finding and defining all of the relevant maps that we need for a typical stage one upgrade.
00:34 On that note, it's worth discussing what that term even means and stage one, stage two etc, these are terms that we hear thrown around without a lot of real understanding on what those terms mean.
00:48 And there is no distinct definition of them.
00:51 Essentially from my perspective, when I'm talking about a stage one upgrade, I'm talking about a basic upgrade where the engine configuration is completey or at least largely stock standard.
01:03 So for example, we could be dealing with a completely stock mechanical configuration or we could be dealing with something with some very light, basic modifications such as maybe an air intake or a cold air intake box.
01:17 Maybe an upgraded air filter in conjunction with those previous modifications and maybe an exhaust system.
01:25 We're definitely not delving into a mechanical modification where maybe the engine has had different cams fitted, a larger turbocharger or a different fuel system.
01:35 Why this is important is it does drive some of the map definitions that we're going to need to find.
01:42 In other words, really for a stage one modification, we're not going to need to be detailing all of the available maps that we would need to get into for more thorough modifications.
01:53 It is a great place to start.
01:55 On that note, it's also worth mentioning that while the MK5 Golf using the Bosch MED9.1 processor or controller, this is now a slightly dated vehicle, it is really a great place to get started when you are learning to apply the skills within this course because the processor is a little bit more simplified than some of the current crop of controllers on the market so this is a great place to put your skills to the test and it's going to be relatively straightforward.
02:29 The car itself at this stage, as mentioned is completely stock standard and we would always start by performing a before run on the dyno just to get a baseline but essentially these vehicles are rated at 147 kW or 200 horsepower flywheel, around about 280 newton metres of torque.
02:49 This should be significant headroom to get a reasonably healthy increase in both torque and power without us needing to overly stretch the calibration.
03:01 We do also need to consider here the quality of the full that we've got access to because that will also drive how far we're able to push the engine while retaining some safety from knock.
03:12 In our case, this engine runs exclusively on NPD 100+ octane fuel which is a really good quality pump gas and we should be able to push this engine reasonably hard when it comes to the tuning side of things without worrying too much about knock, of course we will always be monitoring for knock during the tuning process.
03:33 Talking about the tuning, as we've already heard within this course, the WinOLS course is very squarely focused on how to use WinOLS to find and define the maps as well as to actually make changes to the maps and we will not be focusing within this worked example on the specifics of the tuning so when we get to our optimising the tune section, I'll be covering the ins and outs of it at a high level but we won't actually be following this through on the dyno.
04:02 If you do want a detailed walkthrough of the tuning process using WinOLS then I'd highly recommend you check out our Practical Reflash Tuning course.
04:12 The reflashing worked example of our MK5 Golf using WinOLS will be incorporated into that course.
04:19 So by watching that worked example in conjunction with this WinOLS worked example, you're going to have a complete and thorough understanding of both elements.
04:29 How to use WinOLS to read, define, modify maps and then write to the ECU and then how to use our reflashing step by step process in order to actually check and optimise the tune on the vehicle.
04:44 Now that we know what we're dealing with, lets move into the first step of our process.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
