Discussion and questions related to the course Brake System Design and Optimization
Hi everyone,
I'm rebuilding the brake system on my car and would like to know what's the best material to make the brake lines from. Copper-Nickel, stainless steel, other? Which material is used on high performance applications? What's the most practical to use? Better feel? Which one lasts longer? It's a range rover classic.
Are there any top references to making top quality lines and routing them through the vehicle?
Thank you.
Copper-nickel is cheaper and much easier to work with and stainless would be more resistant to stone damage but it's MUCH harder to work with.
There's no difference in feel, and unless opering in wet and salty environments - salted roads or launching boats into sea water - c/n should last the life of the vehicle, stainless should be the option for extreme conditions.
Don't forget the fittings and calipers will also be subject to corrosion.
My personal recommendation would be to purchase a pre-made kit from a reputable ROVER specialist and use that, in either material, as required - it's have the correct fittings, too.
If you don't have one, pick up a brake line bender, it makes the job much easier - same may recommend a straightener, too, as they come coiled up, but if you've a half decent eye and manual skills, you can easily straighten them by hand
