Discussion and questions related to the course Brake System Design and Optimization
I’ve got a 2 piece rotor and wilwood super lite caliper setup - but for cost reasons, I would like to return to the stock 1 piece cast rotor.
The rotor thickness is the same, outer diameter is the same, fitment is fine - however the stock rotor has more surface area than the narrower “ring” of the 2 piece rotor which leaves about 19mm of unused rotor surface toward the hat with the stock rotors.
Is it ok to run this way or would this cause uneven heating and cooling causing premature warpage?
Opinions? Experiences? All welcome. Thanks !
Shouldn't be a major issue. It may change the temperature your disc runs at and the difference of this over the swept surface, due to longer vanes and this can lead to warpage/coning of the disc. So it might just be something to keep an eye on, especially now you're moving back to a 1 piece disc.
We have the same thing on the front of our honda city staff car you might have seen with no issues.
You might be able to find a larger radius pad that still works in your caliper or even get a custom set to make use of the larger annulus, help with thermal capacity and pad wear.
