I'm curious if the volumetric efficiency table would need to be manually adjusted to fit new VE upon altering cam timing. I know that you may need to adjust the fuel and timing tables, but those of course can require adjusting with changes to VE. Almost undoubtedly changing the cam timing effects the VE, so would you need to adjust this in the VE table manually or do some ECU's handle this automatically? If some ECU's handle this automatically, how commonplace is it for an ECU to operate the VE table on it's own? Thank you.
Tanner,
First, VE will change if the VVT change has a meaningful impact, so it would need accounted for somehow.
Next, I wouldn't say anything handles this automatically, but some OEM ECUs contain VE data for all possible cam angle combinations, so when you alter VVT targets, the ECU does use data which is appropriate for those new VVT targets.
If the cams or heads have been modified, or the bolt on parts have been significantly modified in a way that VE is impacted i.e. aftermarket manifold(s), then those values may need adjusted, even though they are already populated.
Not all OE ECUs are set up that way, so some OE ECUs and many aftermarket ones, will have 1 to a few VE tables only, and will likely need manual adjustment if you change VVT targets.
That's the general answer. If you have a particular engine and ECU you're working with please let us know so we can be more specific.
