If I follow this equation using a 4" bore and a 4" stroke i get the same 402cubic inches at the end. However if use the same equation to try and work out the size of an Ls1 engine with a bore of 3.898" and a stroke of 3.622" I end up with 382cubic inches and not the 346 cubic inches i should have can anyone see were im going wrong?

Post your actual calculations, one line at a time. The most likely problem is digital - you're hitting the wrong key.

When I try to calculate the displacement, I get 345.779 cu in. Here's what I did:

Area of the bore (pi x radius^2) = 3.14 x (3.898/2)^2 = 11.9333

Swept Volume of 1 cylinder = bore area (11.9333) x stroke (3.622) = 43.2224

Total Displacement number of cylinders (8) x swept volume (43.2224) = 345.779
