What is the best wire to use for CAN bus communications. I know it should be twisted pair, but should it be shielded? Is there an off-the-shelf twisted pair Tefzel or similar wire available?
We have always just twisted standard 22 awg tefzel wire -- shielding has not been required in any of the hundreds of installations I've done (CAN is a differential signal pair, so it's very tollerant of inducted noise that hits both lines). I use a pair of safety wire pliers to twist the wires (other end clamped in a vice) before installing sheathing.
Turns out you can by it from places like Waytek wire:
Brilliant, I’ll plan to just twist my own then, it saves buying a minimum length for a couple of short runs. Thanks David!
