Good morning everyone. I crammed a supercharged 5.4L V8 from a 2007 Shelby GT500 into an E36 M3 and am currently struggling with the coil-on-plug wiring. The ignition coils are internally amplified direct fire with 2 wires. Apparently Ford puts the ignition driver within the PCM so it can handle the high current, but my Haltech elite 2500 can not. I think an external igniter might solve the problem but it shouldn't be required given the coils are internally ignited.
How can I wire a 2-terminal internally amplified direct fire coil on plug to a Haltech elite 2500?
I've attached a screenshot from the service manual about the coil pack wiring and a screenshot from Shop Owner Mag regarding Ford coil-on-plugs. Here is a link to the Shop Owner Mag article: https://www.shopownermag.com/a-closer-look-ignition-coils/
Thanks in advance!
I just heard from Haltech and they told me I need to use an external igniter. Below is their response:
Yes, Ford is a bit silly and uses internal ignitors in the ECU for their 2 wire dumb coils. Most modern coils are 3 wire or more and have the ignitor built into the coil, we call these smart coils.
If you want to use those, you will need an external ignitor.
We sell a 8 channel module for this.

I’m going to try and find 3 wire smart coils for the engine. If I can’t find any I will get the Haltech external igniter.
My Focus has those same 2-wire coils, which I am running an Emtron.
I run it with one of these 4-channel Bosch modules. You'll just need 2 of them.
Works fantastic. Only issue is these modules need to be kept away from heat. Install a heatsink, and mount them in a cool location. I've burned a couple, but that was my fault for a poor installation location. Keep them cool, and get a genuine Bosch, and it'll last forever.
The heating issue is good to know. I ordered an external ignition module from Haltech so should be g2g.
How did you know that you fried the module? Where did you mount it to mitigate heat retention? I’m planning on putting mine where the glove box used to be.
