I could use some assistance / recommendation on what gauge wire to use for the two ground pins coming from the Motec IGN4. These will be igniting four, two-pin Denso pencil bike coils. The documentation says "4 identical channels", "each with 20A continuous", "pulsed 40A".
Apologies if the documentation seems clear, but I'm not sure if they are saying that the ground should be able to handle 20, 40, 80, or even 160A (4 channels at 40A pulsed).
Thanks in advance,
Robert
The connectors on the IGN4 are DTM and rated at 7.5 Amps each (continuous). I would expect you would just fine with 18 awg for each GND pin. The reason this 15A total is OK, is because the duty cycle will be relatively low since there is a maximum dwell that is pretty short (measured in mS) for inductive coils, and the coil charging is a ramping current, so average current is usually 1/2 of peak with proper dwell settings.
Thanks David. That's perfect.
