Just curious,
1. why is only one end of shielding grounded?
2. why is it recommended the grounding point be at the end nearest the ECU
You want the shield to provide a protective layer that is close the the ground potential of the device reading the signal. If you connect a shield at both ends, you are asking for a potential ground loop, with the potential rising and falling, basically inducing noise into your signal.
