How are you guys measuring assembled bearing shell I.D. with a dial bore gauge WITHOUT scratching the coating on the bearing?

Second question, What is a good method of measuring crank journals, using a micrometer, without scratching the journals? I don't have a repeatable process that i know wont leave a mark on the journal's. The mic set came with a ball end that i can install on one leg of the micrometer but i found that was difficult to use. the edges of the legs are squared off and not rounded which is where the scratches are coming from.

thank you!

good news. I just went for it and the dial bore gauge did not scratch the coating on the bearings!
