Is it possible to set ring gap for a turbo install and not immediately install a turbo. Would the larger gap openings have any negative effect on the engine?

Yes, just set them to the manufacturer's recomendations for the fuel and boost you want to use and don't worry about it - it's usually only a few thou'" anyway.

No, I've seen many tests by ring manufacturers, and engine builders, where there seems to be neglible affect to seal and blowby up to around the 50 thou'" point, whereas too tight...
