Hi everyone,
Looking at buying a dial bore gauge for engine assembly.
What's a suitable graduation/resolution for engine building?
Thanks
The gauge I'm using is a metric gauge that has a precision of 0.01 mm. The commonly available imperial dial gauges will measure down to 0.001". These are sufficient for most purposes. you can purchase dial gauges that are more precise but you find that the costs start ramping up quite sharply.
What i would like to know what brand would you recommend? What brand do you use? Have you heard of certain brand i should stay clear of. I dont want to have to take the engine apart again. Let alone having it get damage due to the quality of the equipment. Any input helps thanks in advance.
The first question to ask is what do you need the gauge/tool to measure in, imperial inches, or metric mm?
After that, there are many good options, depending on budget. Any of the big name brands should be fine for what you want, and I would suggest making sure they have a calibration/checking tool, or tools if it's a gauge with different sizes that it can be used for.
What I WOULD warn against is buying on-line, unless it's the official outlet for the manufactuirer, or a trusted re-seller - if it's significantly cheaper, then it's 99.99999% a counterfeit tool of unknown quality. Spend the money now, of genuine tools, or spend a lot more later.
FWIW, I think all my, limited, range of measuring tools are Mitutoyo? It's one of the most faked brands, so watch out!
