I am completing the Practical Engine Building course and in the practical 4G63 build you chose the Athena Cut Ring Head gasket as a new choice over the stock MLS.
Just wanted to see what your feedback/review was?
I am building a long rod 2.4l 4G64 and was wondering about the Athena Cut ring gasket as the do one for the 87.5mm bore.
Thanks
So far the gasket has given us no trouble at all however the engine is also still on the engine stand that you'd have seen it on in the worked example - Sadly we've been waiting for our EVO IX to arrive for about 9 months now so I haven't been able to put it to the test. That being said, the reason I went this way is because I have a couple of colleagues in the industry who have used these gaskets in high boost installations with good results so i have some confidence they will work well for our application. Sorry i can't be more help.
Andre, do you have any experience with Siruda head gaskets? I have been using those on 4g engines for a very long time and they are second to none to me...
@Andre - how did the Athena gasket work out for you? I've seen a quite a few complaints that some of them end up leaking water and/or oil.
In controlled lab testing the Athena setup doesn't offer much over a good MLS gasket.
I'd either stick with MLS and good studs unless you really need more, and then if you really need more, then step up to machining for a proper sealing ring like this which will place your weak link elsewhere:
