Hey out there,
I just disassembled my engine and saw a pretty unusual damage which I am not 100% sure what the reason is.
As you can see in the pic, I have a blank area where the hone grind ( I do not know the englisch word :-) ) is gone.
This I have on both sides of the cylinder, and also on each other cylinder.
I have JE pistons installed with a clearance of 0.12mm
2 liter Engine, turbo charged, GTX3076 runing 2 bar of boost
What is your opinion to this?
Is it possible that's where the piston skirt was riding? Perhaps a flat spot on the piston ring? Just my thoughts at first glance, have you had it hot tanked yet to see if it's just dirty?
It's not uncommon to see a polished area on the cylinder wall where the hone pattern appears to be worn away. This isn't something to be worried about. A good guide as to whether you have an issue is if there is scoring or scratches in the cylinder wall that you can feel with your fingernail.
