Hi , my friend is building a forged engine
Engine: z16ler vauxhall with 79mm Je pistons
When he puts the 2nd ring into the bore. The ring gap is about 0.6 mm which i believe is too big, isnt it?
The top rings have 0.35mm ring gap.
Do you think the problem comes from the Je rings themselves? Or will it be ok to build the engine with the 0.6mm gap? Thank you
It's common to run the second ring with a larger end gap, it's (in theory) to reduce possible ring flutter.
Opinions differ, but most consider the top ring to be the primary seal, with the second ring to be more of a secondary oil scraper ring.
Personally, I'd be perfectly happy with those gaps if NA, if turbo'd or using other "power adder", I'd like a bit more top ring.
Thank you!
