HI all.
I am not very familiar with tuning i must say, i just started to read and study.
So,I own an Evo 2 ce9a 4g63 7 bolt Time Attack car. I have just blow my engine (most probably was the tuner's fault) but anyway i am rebuilding the engine with some forged parts right now.
My question is about iyour opinions for the EMS4 Aem ecu?
In my country it doesn't like to our tuners for some reason. They said that they have problems with it, without a specific answer. Is it something wrong with the specific ecu , if you know anything..?
The only thing I noticed about it, was that on the dyno while was connected to the laptop, sometimes was disconnected, and then connected again. Why was that happening?
Thanks
I haven't used the EMS4 myself so I can't comment to thoroughly. It is designed as a low cost entry level product so bare this in mind as it may not offer the sort of features of some of the higher end ECUs your tuners are more familiar with. If the laptop is dropping out of communications then this is generally the result of noise. I've had it from tie to time and it's very frustrating. Are you using a resistive spark plug in the engine? Often a non-resistive spark plug can cause all sorts of ignition noise that can be detrimental.
No, i was using some non-resistive spark plugs. Again i have to say that i was kind of a blind trust to those "specialists". And this is actually the main reason i am writing here right now and started to study more. I decided to do more by my self.
In fact ,the ngk's representative guy of my area, sell to me the "racing" ones, and just now i found that the fitment for these are actually some bikes and quad racers ! The part number is B8EGV (NGK). Does those suits for my engine (2nd G 4g63) ???
Also, about the noise, i got the AEM universal wiring harness (P.N.30-2905-96) for installing the EMS-4 ecu, which is a part of the whole wiring, but for the rest the guy for the work used a solder. Now most people i know say that a soldering iron is a must, and some others exactly the opposite. I believe that this maybe was another reason for that noise, what is your thought?
And last, is there any other parameters for noise? Want to know in order to check and block all of them.
For an 4G63 I would use NGK BR8EG Plugs.
I personally don't agree with soldering wires. Soldering wires puts heat into the copper and makes it weak right next to the solder. Since the solder does not flex this causes the wire to break right beside the join (where the wire has been heated and weakened). Also solder has a tendency to corrode over time. When people talk about solder wires I just remind them that they won't find a solder joint in a factory wiring loom or any aircraft looms etc.
Other issues for noise can be ignition systems to close to ecu or communication systems, poor ground wires for the ECU or engine or even poor quality tuning cables.
Thanks a lot for replaying. I am already in love with this forum!
This time i am gonna use the NGK Racing Spark Plug R7376-8. They are resistor plugs and also are designed for performance purposes, so i think they must be ok for the job.
About my entire harness, its been done with the solder. I guess i can modify it right??? Don't want to use expensive Autosport Connectors.
Any other reliable options?
kkelis,
What exactly has been soldered?
Generally you can cut the solder joints out and fit crimp terminals or crimp connectors in place of solder.
As I mentioned ,i used the AEM universal wiring harness (P.N.30-2905-96) for installing the EMS-4 ecu.I used my stock connectors, from the stock wiring, just cut them with their wires about 10cm long or lower. While the Aem one is a long harness, the solder joins are been made just at this point. Not quite sure how much extra wire, space, i have though (another person made the whole wiring) but if there is any, then i can cut em and use some brand new connectors right?
