Hi,
I have watched the webinar on breaking in an engine which was very useful and am about to start up my newly built engine for the first time.
What I am concerned about is as it is my first attempt attuning an engine how long can I really afford to stuff around with getting it to idle and the like before the engine really needs to cycle through power runs to bed in the rings?
This is how i do that- start the engine up, keep the revs changing from 2000 to 3700 RPM constantly with vehicle suspended and observe for any leaks. If there are no leaks shut the engine down, bring the vehicle to the ground. Start it up again and keep changing the revs whilst stationary as little as possible. Get on the road as soon as reasonably practicable and aply the load progressively as you drive for first 100 miles. I always use mineral oil for beaking in. After first 100 miles change the oil to normal ( fully synthetic in my case) and keep applying higher loads.
I suspect you'll receive varied views on this topic.
As you gain experience, your initial tune will be closer to the mark, and it will take you seconds to get fuel on target.
When starting your tuning journey, getting fuel and idle sorted will take more time. My thought is use your foot if needed to keep the engine going while you get fueling on target and avoid bore wash first, then start varying RPM and adjusting fuel, then fix idle.
