Hi Andre,

In the DTA S100 pro ECU that we installed on BMW M54b25, there is no file for this exact engine to configure the setting. This BMW has twin vanos. When we purchased the ECU, the manufacturer informed us that it works on such engine. But we need to do mild modifications to one of the files stored in the ECU for BMW. I attached a shot of the files stored in it. All are for M3. We chose the closest of all to the M54b25, given that the engine is stock, and it is meant for daily driving. the turbo installed and boost limit up to 7psi.

We did cranking as you mentioned in the road tuning course and an oscilloscope graph is attached too.

The flywheel is 60-2 teeth. THe trigger is a hall effect. So far so good. Now what about the cam readings in degrees, how to use these numbers that we got from the oscilloscope and min and max rpm? This is our first time in tuning and I have no experience with using the oscilloscope. I attached also the engine mode that is defaulted to the file we chose. The car starts but after few seconds, it will give a message of cam1 error in red. Please help and if you need further information, let me know.

Thank you.

Off note: all connections done are ok as shows in the diagnostic display. (all show in green).

I haven't personally had any experience with the DTA ECU so I can't offer too much help here. It may be best to contact DTA directly and see if they can offer any support on this particular engine. I've tuned a M54B30 engine on a Link G4 ECU but this isn't probably too much help. One of the other members on here has tuned a DTA on an S54 M3 engine but I can't imagine that being much help to you as there are already base files for the M3 engine.

I'm sorry I can't be more help.

I put more hopes on your feedback as I e-mailed DTA with the oscilloscope graph but didn't provide feedback at all regarding the mode to be used or the engine configuration. They only provided feedback on the option of spark plugs. I know this is not good but this is what exactly happened.

One suggestion if possible please Andre: Can we have a course on oscilloscope readings and the different cam and crank degrees importance and how to use them? As you mentioned in the road tuning course, we can use an oscilloscope for the configuration of the trigger input. In fact, this needs further elaboration. Hope you take it into consideration.

Thank you.

That is a little disappointing that DTA couldn't provide better support for you. I'll ask Chris from STM to jump on and see if he can offer any help based on the S54 engine he tuned.

A webinar on using an oscilloscope is a great idea. Understanding how to use the scope and what the signals mean however is only one aspect of this. The setup data the ECU needs will still vary dramatically from brand to brand so often the scope trace on its own is not enough - Some level of knowledge with the ECU is also necessary.

Unfortunately the only engine I have done on a DTA ECU is a Turbo Hayabusa, the S54 was on a Specialist Components ECU.

From my knowledge of the DTA software it appears to be setup correctly looking at your screen shots. Although I saw you said the trigger is hall effect, im assuming you're talking about only the Cam trigger and not the crank. Is this running a standard loom or has it been wired in?

My suggestion is that the crank runs a Reluctor pickup and it is possible the wires could be around the wrong way. The car will still start although the signal would be incorrect. They oscilloscope picture you gave is fairly basic. Can you get your hands on a better scope to give a more accurate reading of the pattern being produced?

I don't mean to tell you how to suck eggs, but have you read the DTA manual?

The DTA manual is very good and goes into detail about the oscilloscope and how to work out the numbers.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
