Hello Guys,

Just got a Subaru BRZ 2017 Limited with the goal to supercharge it. Planning to get the HKS Turbo Kit and was wondering if I can keep the factory ECU or i would need a standalone? I am not familiar with those type of ECUs and don’t know what the max numbers are hardcoded and it’s limitations.

Our apologies for the delay in response. I've been working Pikes Peak Hill Climb and Andre is on vacation.

The stock ECU with a custom Ecutek tune can manage that setup if the goal is simply to get it running well plus a few extra features.

If you're looking for serious race oriented features beyond what Ecutek plus custom tables is capable of, then you may want to consider a standalone for off road use.

Which kit, they list three?https://www.hks-power.co.jp/en/pickup-car/86/sc_tc/turbo.html#

Looks like the first uses the OEM, with the second a 'piggy back'?

As they sell it as a "kit", it should have what's needed for an otherwise stock vehicle. NOTE, however the comment about a higher torque rated clutch!

BTW, you used both "super-" and "turbo-" in your enquiry. They are two quite different things and both are available for that vehicle, in a range of options.

Mike, thank you very much, I think ECUtek can fit whatever I need. I will add a HKS boost controller to reach over 400 HP, obviously on forged internals with ARP studs.

@Gord, sorry I meant turbocharge it. The HKS kit stages you are talking are all the same physical turbo kit but just different power levels. I want to go with the highest stage and will build the engine with low compression pistons and forged internals. As mentioned a boost controller will be added. The HKS Kit does indeed supply everything needed. I will try to capture as much as possible to provide a guideline and a base tune here in the forum.

Valentin,

In case it helps save some money and simplify the tuning process, Ecutek software can handle boost control if you purchase a typical solenoid, rather than a complete standalone boost control system.
