I'm in the process of fitting multiple thermocouples throughout the car for datalogging.

Could someone tell me what safe operating ranges the following are?

Gearbox oil

Rear diff oil

Power steering oil.

So I can set up some alarms triggers if things start getting too hot.

Thanks .

It's going to depend on the oils, whether mineral or synthetic, and you should find the data you need from their products' spec' sheets.

Gord is spot on with recommending the correct fluids for the application..

As a general rule. Gearbox and diff oils do not like high temps.. even the good stuff. Whilst engine oils will take 120degs c for shortish periods. Like 1 track day. Gearbox oil at 120degc won’t like it at all.

Aim for around 80degsC, transients to 100degc..

Thanks for the reply for now those ball park figures will be fine. I'll be more specific once I get the data from each fluid

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
