I'm in the final stages of converting a VW type 4 aircooled four cylinder boxer engine from stock D-jet to EFI.
I'm starting this topic to hopefully gather experiences from converting and tuning aircooled engines and I'll start by presenting my own build. To complicate things I'm not only changing the ecu, I'm also converting to ITB's. Fun fun fun :)
Base engine is a 2.0 Porsche 914 engine, bored from 94 to 96 mm, stroked from 71 to 78 mm to create a 2276 cc engine with 10.3:1 compression.
Intake: EMPI IDF manifolds with 40 mm throttle bodies with a built in TPS sensor. A Master/slave pulley system links them together.
Exhaust: Stock 914 heater boxes.
Sensors: Type 4 crank trigger kit, Mini cam sync, Modified GM CLT sensor, IAT sensor, (all of the previous from thedubshop.net) One head temp sensor per cylinderhead coupled directly to the ECU's EGT ports.
Ecu: Maxxecu V1 from Swedish Maxxtuning.
Fuel: Bosch fuel pump, 3 bar FPR, Bosch 360 cc/min injectors and Denso Flexfuel sensor.
Spark: LS2 coils controlled by the ECU.
Since the ITB's dont give me much vacuum to work with I'm going to tune it in Alpha-N to start with and evolve from there.
If you have any questions please ask and I'll try to answer as best I can. If you have any knowledge or tips please feel free to share it.
Will be very interested in your posts. I am upgrading my aircooled porsche 3.2 engine from motronic to Link G4+ Extreme. ( overkill but it was a good price ) Planning the sensors and wiring required at the moment. Will change intake eventually to pmo injection set up however I want to see the potential gains back to back with the standard intake less afm, sequential injection and spark. I will dyno current set up and then new on rolling road dyno. i plan to use the 1 cht sensor ( hadn't considered 2) I will use a knock sensor on each bank Modify the current distributor for cam position and use a 12 tooth wheel on the crank position. I will use modern high impedance injectors etc etc etc.....
If the gains are good enough I may not try PMO's depending on what they have achieved instead may head down the turbo/ supercharging track. ( Not VF engineering )
Regards
I figured I'd go thru my sensor setup and show what I'm using.
This is my trigger wheel, 36-1 with Hall sensor and stainless mounting bracket for type 4 engine.
Top left is the Intake Air Temp sensor and above the wheel is the Coolant temp sensor, its a modified GM CLT sensor.
Mini cam sync. A thedubshop.net creation that replaces the distributor and gives a sync signal. At the moment I'm running wasted spark so I'm not using it for now.
The drivers side throttle body with the master throttle pulley and on the far side of it is the TPS sensor.
Passenger side throttle body with the IAT sensor.
Thanks
