I have recently purchased 2 ultragate 38 wastegates one new and one second hand to use on a twin scroll manifold

Both are the older type with the 6 bolt cap I am abit confused with the spring colours the new one is a 7psi and has a green and white spring in as expected I have opened the 2nd had one and this has a plain small spring a brown/red medium spring and a large brown/pink spring

Do I need to put a brown/purple spring in here for 7psi or should I put a green and white like in the new one?

Im pretty confident the 2nd hand one is a genuine turbosmart it came off a competitive drag car with all the Turbosmart toys on it an the owner told me it was genuine and have no reason to doubt him

I have contacted turbosmart who forwarded me to a UK dealer who didn’t want to know they obviously didn’t want to just sell a spring

I don’t know if they are just different generations of 38mm ultragates hoping someone with experience can help

Cheers

Si

Hi Simon,

Sounds like you have a mixture of 2 different generation springs fitted. If they are both the no locking ring style 38mm gate they should use the spring chart here https://www.turbosmart.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/WG_Ultragate38.pdf

If they are identical wastegates it sounds like the second hand gate is using the later model with locking ring here.

To achieve 7psi you can do it a few ways. To use either the brown/purple middle spring only or you can use the brown/pink outer spring only.

However, being that it sounds like the second hand wastegate is using the wrong spring chart, the pressure ratings might not be right.

To work out if it will work at the correct pressure with the wrong generation springs you need to know the installed height of the springs in the 2 generation wastegates are the same.

Or you can apply a boost gauge and controlled compressed air and see when they open.

Ye they are both the six bolt types with no locking rings I wonder if it has just got the later springs in it must have been running some high boost the spring pressure from the 3 springs is mental lol

Cheers

We often run 3 springs and might only be around 20-22psi. I guess depends what your motor can take.

My guess is someone has just used the late model springs, whether it is accurate with the older wastegate or not I can't comment

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
