Ive been building these machines for a while and recently switched to methanol at the request of a customer. I feel like I'm really close as it’s making great power but it keeps destroying one or both spark plug. Using NGK 9’s, logging through Dynojet software. I’ve a wide range of timing, and a wide range of AFR’s. The richer i go it makes more power but still after about 4-5 seconds burns out the plug with no other damage and no knock reference. What is a basic safe lambda value for meth and nitrous. Thank you
The heat range for replacement NGK 'plugs goes to at least 11 - I'd try those next.
However, for REALLY extreme conditions, there are other alternatives, from different manufactures including NGK, that have recessed ground electrodes and centre electrodes - eg https://www.repco.co.nz/parts-service/ignition/spark-plugs/ngk-racing-spark-plug-r6725-115/p/A1054497?rgfeed=true&cid=google-shopping&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw9p24BhB_EiwA8ID5Bniytn1GcL6ErpaPNrHhIo8_qzp74HOPxaNB43u-hEZNgOns2_hcUBoCUVkQAvD_BwE, some have no ground electrodes and are rim fired - eg https://nz.gsparkplug.com/1x-ngk-copper-core-spark-plug-bue-2322.html?wi=off&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw9p24BhB_EiwA8ID5BsbkmRHJVRYmzjwyE9MzTldXk_cl6WxUirs_dVHzEMjl-2tMKqX6sxoCVi0QAvD_BwE, normally there can be a concern about deposits because they're basically running at the cylinder head temperature, but between the alcohol fuel and a "hot" ignition, I can't se that being a problem.
i'd suggest downloading the race spark plug catalogues from your preferred manufacturer(s) and checking out those options.
Methanol is known to be prone to pre-ignition. Could it be the case since the symptom is burnt spark plugs? It occurs very rapidly and can burn out the plug very quickly...
