I'm getting ready to calibrate my VE table for my Built EJ257 with Cams running a Precision 5862. My power goal will require the use of W/M as our local fuel is hot garbage and E85 is not practical.
I've broken my VE map into about 4 sections as far a the calibration process goes, Idle/cruse, transient below 100KPA, incremental ramp runs on wastegate pressure and incremental high boost ramp runs. It goes without saying that target lambda will be set rich and timing kept low during the VE calibration. Pretty standard process and all, but my question is... In the likely event I need to involve the W/M system to keep the engine happy when hitting higher boost levels (This is a knock happy EJ after all), what's the best way to account for the variable that spraying W/M introduces? Obviously methanol is a fuel and will impact the lambda value, which if taken at face value will cause inconstancies with the VE calibration. My first thought is just run straight water. Being non combustible it is my understanding that it shouldn't effect my lambda reading. Once I'm happy with my VE table I can switch to a 50/50 mix and start calibrating timing and fuel. The other option I see is to calculate the variable based on the amount of flow, W:M ratio and so on. The problem with the math option is that I would have to make assumptions on flow, as my Aquamist system isn't directly measuring flow. Its just displaying pump speed therefor, I would have to further calculate flow based on my nozzle size and I doubt flow is liner based on pump output. It sounds rather complicated and inaccurate.
If anyone has any experience or though I would love to hear them. I'm no pro, just a dedicated hobbyist who enjoys the process just as much, if not more than the result.
