This may be a stupid question so apologies if it is but what would be the issues using a transverse engine and gearbox longitudinally and using the left / right outputs as front / rear for four wheel drive?

I know it would need the front and rear diffs managing to ensure correct rotation but just wondering what other issues there would be.

Has anyone tried it?

Assuming you only want to top out at 40km/h with conventional diff ratios or can source 1:1 or similar diffs I don't see any significant problems.

As Michael said, gearing may be a problem, but combining the tallest ratios available for the gearbox' diff', and the axle diff's might get you close. I do know of some off-road "specials" that did exactly this, using Minis as donor vehicles, with the mini diff' welded to ensure drive to both ends. It was a very long time ago, so can't really give details other than that.

Packaging may be an issue, if trying to fit it into a conventional vehicle, as may the torque balance.

Oh, and depending on the use, you may need to address the sump and oil pick-up.

Thanks for the responses guys. Fundamental issue, diff ratio, hadn’t thought about that. Food for thought though, thanks again.
