First it's a pleasure to be among this community as this is my first topic on hp Academy forum and hopefully i will be helpful for you all as you will be for me.

My name is mahmoud and I'm from Bahrain and drifting is my main passion in life and in this topic i need some advice on an engine choice.

I have a 2006 Ford mustang 4.6 modular 3V engine my plan is to transform it to a drift car and one of the first steps is how to produce more power:

1- i can build it's engine from the ground up with a stocker kit, cam shafts, porting the cylinder head with new valves,... etc. This will cost me around 4000usd and upon some research i made the engine will produce around 400 hp and it will sound great lol.

2- at the same time i can buy a 5.0 coyote engine from 2010 to 2013 year range with also around 4000usd and it will produce the same amount of power.

My budget can cover any of this two choices and i don't know wich will be the best way to go but my future plan is to reach up to 700 to 800 hp. I hope i can get some feedback from you soon as there are a lot of pros and cons for both engines.

I was looking at an article that was comparing an LSx swap to building a Coyote engine and some of that may apply here. With the Coyote, it's DOHC which means more cost because of more parts to go into the heads. I don't know the materials of both engines, but if they're the same then I would assume that the Coyote would also weigh more, however much that affects drifting I don't know.

For your final goal of 700-800hp, you'll need to consider if either block needs to be sleeved, and if so, how much that costs/weighs.

I hope that at least helps somewhat and maybe someone else can chime in. For me, the article pretty much made it clear that LSx is the cheaper way to go if you want to consider that as an option.

I was starting to compare the two engines from weight prospective and found out the 4.6 is remarkably lighter as it has an aluminum block (a lighter car means it is easier to control in my point of view) and there are a lot of people on forums and articles how are saying it can take a lot of abuse (I just met one guy from KSA he has an 07 mustang with a supercharged stock internals 4.6 engine and he is going to all drift events for 3 years now and the engine is still running till now with 390WHP ), also I did some research on coyote engine and yes it must be sleeved to reach 700-800 hp and it will cost much more than the 4.6

but I don't think I will go for LSx swap as it will be easy in a way and for this build I'm considering it a good learning curve for me so I'm going to:

1- start by building the cylinder head (porting, new valves and cams) and for now I'm searching for valves sizes and cam shaft duration and lift to get the max power on this 4.6 NA. stock bottom end.

2- also I will consider bigger intake and exhaust manifolds with a fuel pressure gauge and maybe new injectors

3- more efficient spark plugs and coils.

4- lighter drive shaft

5- new gear ratio and lsd for the differential, I didn't decided on the gear ratio till now but I will consider 4.1 or 4.56

6- new exedy stage 3 clutch

7- some suspension modes, I already have a full set of BC racing coilovers but I need more steering angle

7- a good tune will learn me how all of this affect the engine power output and what is it's limits.

with all of this I should get closer to 340 whp and a moderate drift machine. the next step will be building the bottom end for preparation of a good forced induction system (when I can raise more money).

if you have any notes that will help me I will appreciate the advice as now I'm in search mode as I don't wana make any wrong choices that will make my wallet empty lol.
