When tuning diesels, what are your go to EGT, AFR, and boost sensors for logging aforementioned parameters in the scanner in HP Tuners? I currently have a MPVI3 with the Pro cable and currently use a WEGO AFR module to log AFR for gasoline engines, adding diesel tuning, not doing it before, would like a good recommendation for these, buy once, cry once so to speak, as I own a chassis dyno and currently own a diesel truck (duramax) for practice.
These usually would be good options for a smooth experience:
- EGT: Auber K-Type thermocouple with a 0-5V converter (like an AEM X-Series EGT module) or a Banks iDash probe. Both are solid and accurate.
- AFR: Ballenger AFR500 with an NTK sensor—handles diesel soot better than Bosch sensors and stays accurate longer.
- Boost: AEM 0-100 PSI MAP sensor or a Honeywell 100 PSI sensor. Both work well for higher boost logging.
Since you’ve got a dyno and are starting with a Duramax, these will get you good, clean data without having to mess around too much. Buy once, cry once. What’s your setup—stock turbo, bigger injectors, or just ECM tuning for now?
Leo's got you some good info. I will that on a Duramax or any engine with variable geometry turbo controls it's really crucial to have a MAP sensor on the engine that's able to read out a few PSI over your max commanded boost pressure. That sensor should be scaled and integrated to the engine controller for best results.

@LEOBALLZ, truck is stock with minor upgrades, stock turbo, stock injectors, 5" exhaust, etc. I wanted to get the fundamentals nailed down, I use my own vehicles to practice with before venturing out. I have been tuning EFI gas engines for 8 years now and have a good understanding of hp tuners, holley, fueltech. next is figuring out histograms, logging proper channels, etc. Are you monitoring these sensors in the hp tuners scanner or externally? I can see the AFR being logged with the scanner (hp tuners), for gas vehicles i use an external MAP for boost and Pressure sensor for fuel pressure logged in my dynojet software and compare my scanner at certain rpm's for reference. I currently have an Edge CTS3 monitor in the truck with their EGT sensor in the drivers manifold and a pressure sensor for the lift pump. can the edge be connected to hp tuners to log in the scanner?
That’s a solid approach—learning on your own truck first. Since you’ve been tuning gas EFI for a while, the basics carry over, just with different fueling and boost control strategies.
For logging, yeah, you can pull AFR straight into HP Tuners through your Pro Link, same with an external MAP and fuel pressure sensor. Comparing Dynojet logs with HP Tuners is a smart move—helps cross-check everything.
The Edge CTS3 is great for monitoring, but it doesn’t log into HP Tuners. You’d have to compare the data manually. If you want everything in one place, wiring your EGT and fuel pressure sensors into the MPVI3 Pro Link inputs would be the way to go. That way, all your data is in HP Tuners, and you can build proper histograms without having to piece things together.
