Hello, Names Michael coming from Wa state i was wondering if i can run a waste spark system instead of direct spark on my 99 Mustang GT was an idea that was tossed from a friend I.E Instead of a G4X Storm using a Monsoon or Atom and routing the system in that aspect.
Running waste spark would double the work that is required from each ignition coil (as each coil will need to fire twice for 720 degrees of crankshaft rotation; instead of once for individual coils for each cylinder). What is your intent of this engine/idea for considering waste spark? Do you have the ignition system to support running waste spark (ignition dwell/saturation time (especially at high rpm's))?
Hello from Wyoming.
well the intent was to see if we could do it. it was more of a theoretical thought more than anything as im also still new to tuning. And as far as i know the 4.6 2v could support it but i would assume on the older engines which ran two ignition coils instead of a separate coil for each cylinder. and i currently don't have the dwell or saturation time and am having a tough time finding that info for my car since ford makes it tough and i dont want to trust every forum i come across nor do i have any ways of reading it currently. Unless I'm just looking in the wrong places.
It is typically very challenging (if not impossible) to find technical specs for factory parts. My personal thoughts/opinions are that there is a reason that the waste spark system was used for a relatively short time for a few vehicles; which should show that it was not beneficial/favorable for manufacturers nor the consumer.
A COP (coil on plug) or CNP (coil near plug) system could provide more user control (through tuning) and performance capability; in my personal opinion/knowledge.
