You say in the video that you can not install the cams into the head without it bolted to the block. I was wondering how the machine shop accomplishes this task without the block? I understand the head bolts are covered by the camshafts, but couldn't you still set valve lash on the head stand?
You can set the valve lash with the head sitting on the bench or on a stand, however it's quite likely that the alloy casting will move around slightly when it's actually bolted to the block and this may affect the final lash clearance. Machine shops who are very familiar with a given engine may have an allowance that they use when setting lash on the bench because they know from experience how much this clearance will change once the head is installed.
