Discussion and questions related to the course Practical Motorsport Wiring - Club Level
First post on here so hello everyone! I'm in the process of designing a harness for my Citröen 2CV with a BMW R1100RT engine swap. The car currently runs already with the stock bike harness but it's very old and has seen better days. I also want to add a bit more flexibility to the harness.
The design is pretty mature already on the engine side of things but I wanted to get the input from those who have done this before me. Where do you define the line between an engine harness and a chassis harness? For example, do the wires to your gauges belong in the engine harness or the chassis harness?
Do you build the two harnesses completely separately and use connectors at the few points where they come together? At the fuse box for example. I've toyed around with different designs that go from one big harness to do everything from engine functions to lighting, interior power, etc to completely separate harnesses for each function. Any input on best practice would be welcome.
I've also managed to identify most connectors, but some others I'm having more trouble with. I'll post the ones I have identified first, a verification would be appreciated!
CO Potentiometer
I'm pretty sure this is a 3 way Junior Timer. The part printed on the 1928 402 086 / 088 / 090 / 092.
Injectors and oil temperature sensor
I'm told these are 2 way Junior Timers or EV1s? The part number on the originals for the injectors is 1928 402 078 / 080 / 082 / 084 and for the oil temp sensor 1 732 460 9 / 461 9 / 462 9.
Throttle Position Sensor
I believe this is a 4 way Junior Power Timer, original part number is 1928 402 587 to 590.
The connectors up to this last one I think are correct and have a source for. Now for the ones I cannot seem to identify and/or find anywhere.
Hall Effect Sensor
I'm assuming this is an AMP connector but I can't seem to find a replacement (or documentation for that matter) anywhere. Any pointers would be welcome, at this point a source of replacement pins would be sufficient, the body is in fairly good condition.
Coil
This is the one I'm most stuck with, it only has a BMW part number on it (which has led me nowhere). Maybe the eagle-eyed among you recognise it from other applications? Again, just a replacement set of pins would be ok at this point. Otherwise I'll have to cut the original from the harness and splice onto the original wires (with the obvious downsides that brings).
For the sub-harness connections I'll be using Deutsch DT connectors, any recommendations on a crimper that won't break the bank? I'm no professional and hopefully I'll only be building this thing once!
Thanks for the input in advance! If anyone's interested in the build I can probably post something up on the build thread forum.
Hi Carlos, there isn't strictly a right and wrong way to integrate your chassis and ECU wiring and ultimately it's up to the individual. Personally I do separate the two harnesses and use a few key connectors between the two as required. In your example I'd consider gauges part of the chassis harness and use a suitable connector (DTM) between the ECU and chassis harness for whatever needs to go to the gauges.
You've identified the junior timer connectors correctly and should have no trouble sourcing these. The remainder unfortunately are not connectors I'm familiar with. Hopefully someone else may be able to offer some assistance here.
