Discussion and questions related to the course Practical Motorsport Wiring - Club Level
Why splice to shield braid and not just connect shield braid direct to ground if possible? Is that wrong?
It all depends on the shielding. Sometimes, I can de-braid, twist it to look like a wire, and put sheathing over that and crimp the result in a terminal. Other times, I need to splice to it (and maybe other shields together) and use a short section of conventional wire.
Okay, so its more what´s best for the aplication then? Because i have done like you described and twisted the sheild and put sheathing and a ring terminal
Yup, I'd agree that either is fine, and I've done both, but splicing the shield to a piece of wire, and then the wire into a connector is going to work every single time, whereas it'll totally depend on your setup / strip length as to whether you can crimp a terminal directly to the straightened out braid... I like to have a known, planned solution come build time, so I go for the splice to a wire method :-).
