Discussion and questions related to the course 3D Modelling & CAD for Motorsport.
Hi, everyone. Is it possible to create an exhaust manifold from a 3d model? If so, is there a website with reliable 3d files to buy? The goal is to create exhaust manifolds in series and then sell them on the internet
Yes absolutely.
Check out this turbo manifold I've been helping my brother with, although this will be cast or 3D printed and has serious space constraints. (this was his first 3D modeling project!)
I'm starting to work on one for my 240z as well, which will mostly be fabricated. I think we'll probably do some content on something like this as a worked example within the next year.
While I would say they aren't the easiest thing to model, once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad.
Basically you want to start with 2D sketches and simple models for the flanges where you want them and then join the dots with some centrelines that guide the shape of each tube, then use the pipe, sweep or loft tool to model the tubes.
We also have an example of reverse engineering one from a 3D scan in our 3D scanning course that we've just released: https://www.hpacademy.com/courses/practical-3d-scanning/
