Discussion and questions related to the course Practical Motorsport Wiring - Professional Level
Hi,
Concentric twisted harnesses we always an obsession for me. I believe that all harnesses should be done this way, and I try to do all my customer's cars with a concentric twisted harness.
What I wanted to know from you guys who also build concentric twisted harnesses is how long does it take you? I'm trying to gauge if I'm really slow at building them, or if it is a norm to take up to a month to do a full car, i.e. chassis and engine harness. sometimes I get so frustrated that I want to give up and just do normal harnesses!
Any input will be highly appreciated!
Thanks.
It'll depend on the complexity, how much time is spent chasing up connectors, etc, and how many hours in your "month", but I understand that isn't beyond what some take - maybe those experienced in the more complex looms can comment?
I'm busy with a Porsche, re-wiring a per-existing installations of a Motec M134. I'm wiring everything from C127 to sequential gearbox, paddles, compressor, wheel speed sensors, pressure sensors (oil and fuel), temp sensors, DBW, DBW Pedal sensor, ethanol sensors, dual ignition coils per cylinder, etc.
Currently I have over 120 hours into this harness. Not sure if I'm within the time frame of such a harness. I know it is difficult to give exact hours required, but if it is similar for other people, then I wont feel so bad, and consider doing more "club-level" harnesses.
And this is why I've never built a complete concentric twisted harness from scratch (I have repaired them or re-done sections). It is NOT required to have a very successful build of a sealed harness using Autosport connectors, boots, etc. I still twist wires to maintain the flexibility, but adding fillers and perfecting lays -- not enough time in the day, or money in my customer's pockets to do that.
I'm at crossroads with this..........
It will be fine. You've seen what OEMs do, and they can last for decades... Start with just doing your engine and power harnesses... often times there are only a few wires each leg.
