I do not understand how the Coefficient of Friction (COF) can change due to vertical load. I thought COF is just that a COF. The friction force then is purely the Vertical load x COF. The COF is dependent on the surface and the material sliding over it. It is not dependent on load. AS the vertical load is increased due to lateral weight transfer, the lateral force offered by the tyres on the surface will increase.
Can you please explain how the COF decreases
I can't follow the graph in the module about load transfer. Lateral load is dependent on mass, COG, G and trackwidth. Assuming vertical load in the graph is Mass - it should be a linear relationship between vertical load and lateral Load. COF should be a constant between any two surfaces, ie rubber/ asphalt
Because the tire is a spring, and rubber is elastic -- Coefficient of Friction (COF) which is a calculated value for the relationship between the normal (verticlal load) and lateral grip changes with the value of the normal load. The COF is a curve for elastic tires, so the COF is relatively constant until the grip deforms the tires, then begins to drop with additional load.
