Summary

00:00 - Danny has asked, can you explain how would maps like bangs and pops and anti-lag work? OK so a couple of different things here.
00:08 So anti-lag or two step launch control, two different options there.
00:13 So actual anti-lag which I refer to as rally anti-lag is where the driver is off the throttle and this is a technique used to increase turbo boost response.
00:22 So what happens is that when the driver backs off the throttle, extra air is bypassed around the throttle or the throttle is physically held open and normally that would end up with the engine making a lot of power and torque so that's obviously not what we want.
00:34 When the driver's off the throttle the driver wants the car to be slowing down.
00:37 So in order to stop the engine from making power and torque, the ignition timing is massively retarded and the ignition is cut on individual cylinders and what this does is it allows unburned fuel and air to actually combust in the exhaust system and when it does this it creates energy to drive the turbocharger.
00:55 So that's the first one, anti-lag.
00:58 It's likely to create loud pops and bangs and also flames out the exhaust.
01:01 The other one is two step launch control which is more used for a drag car style launch control where we've got a very large turbo that's hard to spool.
01:10 The process is however pretty similar.
01:13 The driver's now at full throttle, the engine is popping away on a engine rev limiter or launch control limiter and fuel, or in this technique usually ignition is cut to individual cylinders, fuel and air is passed through the combustion chamber and the ignition timing is retarded.
01:30 Again generating heat to help drive that turbocharger and create boost pressure while the engine is sitting stationary on the line.
