When learning any new skill that requires specialist equipment, part of that learning process involves discovering what works, what doesn't, and how important some tools are in relation to others. Following on from your free CAD & 3D Scanning lesson, here's a rundown on some of the equipment we used and discussed to help you get your bearings.

3D Modeling CAD Software
In the lesson, Connor demonstrated a mix of software, including Fusion (aka Fusion 360), Peel.OS and Peel.CAD.
Fusion
Fusion is our preferred platform at HPA, and it’s an excellent choice for beginners. Even the free license offers robust features. Unless you have a specific reason to use an alternative like SOLIDWORKS for Makers, then we strongly recommend starting with using Fusion.
Peel.OS & Peel.CAD
Peel.OS and Peel.CAD are designed specifically for the Peel brand scanner featured in the lesson. Peel.OS, included for free with the scanner, offers essential functionality, while Peel.CAD provides advanced features for more in-depth workflows. For those using Peel scanners in a professional setting, Peel.CAD is a reliable, user-friendly option but unlike Fusion, it does cost a significant amount (comparatively) to license.
3D Scanner Options
There are a range of 3D scanners on the market from the $799+ iPhone 16 in your pocket to scanners worth $100,000's, which are not really something we're looking at in the automotive aftermarket/home workshop. We have to use something to demonstrate this scanning knowledge though rather than only talk about the theory, and in this lesson we used our ever-reliable Peel 3 scanner.
In the video below, Connor spends 10 minutes giving you a rundown on 4 sub $1000 USD options that might suit you and your workshop setup. These options include:
3DMakerpro Moose 0.03mm claimed accuracy | https://hpcdmy.co/amaMoose
RevoPoint RANGE 2 0.3mm claimed accuracy | https://hpcdmy.co/amaRANGE2
Creality CR-Scan Otter 0.02mm claimed accuracy | https://hpcdmy.co/amaOtter
Shinning 3D EINSTAR 0.1mmm claimed accuracy | https://hpcdmy.co/amaEINSTAR - HPA recommends
CAD Files - 3D Mesh & 3D Model Project Files
As promised, you can download the CAD files and scans Connor used in the Introduction to 3D Scanning & CAD lesson right here. It includes the Wilwood caliper, front brake disc plus the S14 upright and hub that were all used during the demonstration.
CAD Software System Requirements
You might be wondering what the system requirements are to run software like Fusion, and you're right to ask. Check out this page here for system specifications.
Connors tip: If you have to be on the minimum end of things, focus on adding extra ram if the budget allows as this is the 'best bang for buck' performance increase given the cost of RAM vs other components and the impact it has on working with larger files.
Where Does 3D Printing Fit Into All This?
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process of creating three-dimensional objects from a digital file. It involves layering materials—such as plastic, metal, or resin—one thin layer at a time until the final object is formed. This technology allows for complex designs and customization, making it widely used in automotive and motorsport applications both at DIY and professional levels.
To use a 3D printer though you must have a file good to go, and and that is how it ties directly into both 3D modelling and scanning with both tasks often being integral to the whole process.

What Tool Should I Get Next?
No matter how many tools you purchase, projects you plan, or software you install, they’re only as valuable as your ability to use them effectively. Without the right knowledge, these resources risk becoming expensive, unused assets rather than the stepping stones to success you intended.
That’s where HPA courses make all the difference. If you’ve read this far but haven’t explored the 60-day money-back guarantee webinar package, now might be the time. With lifetime access, it’s a risk-free way to build your skills and add real value to your toolkit.
