Hi everyone,

I am trying to figure out the tuning before committing to my project of boosting my 2002 Mitsubishi Galant and I want to help a friend out with boosting his 3G eclipse. I wanted to figure out some of the information ahead of time and prepare myself so I know what I'm getting into. Here are the things I had questions about:

1. How to approach MAF and injector scaling?

So as far as I could tell from the free reflash lessons from HPAcademy, there is no accurate way to tell if the MAF vs injector scaling is accurate. Adding the turbo changes the MAF scaling and because of the turbo, you need to change injector sizing. So what is the best way to approach this? I think the easiest way to achieve it would be to use the stock injectors but keep the load low and scale the injectors and then scale the MAF after the injectors are scaled. If there is something that I'm missing please let me know on this one!

2. ECUFlash and .xml addresses

I want to understand how the addresses work better and in the stock ECM I can see the addresses for AFR, RPM, and then the map itself. I want to know how to determine what the values of the addresses are for all the maps as it looked like the addresses were different for RPM in my .xml file versus an evo 8 .xml file. Is this specific to my vehicle or are all vehicles with my definition file the same? I saw some information in the EvoM forum about a python script that would take thousands of hours as that seems a bit exaggerated.

3. What tables should be utilized?

I didn't know if an appropriate way to approach boosting the cars for an initial configuration would be to start with just wastegate spring pressure and adjust the fueling and ignition maps. I would change the fueling and ignition maps to meet the load requirements as I would extend them beyond the stock 100% load to allow for a boost section of the tables. I know this is not the best way to do this as it doesn't allow for the ECU to compensate for the desired AFR if it doesn't have a boost reference in the ECM but it could at least get the vehicle running and driving ok. What mitsubishi maps are helpful and which aren't? I know this application is not the same as an OEM evo 8 so not every map will be necessarily used.

I know that I don't have the most knowledge and I want to learn how to do this properly and have a safe and reliable calibration for my vehicle and my friend's vehicle. I know I can purchase the courses but I was laid off recently and can't afford to purchase at the moment but I can learn some more information about the ECM and help my friend who has the vehicle that is ready for boost.

Thank you!

Hi Sean, please refer to the sections of the practical reflash tuning course which cover injector and MAF scaling. As stated in the course, you can't scale both together as it's impossible to know where your inaccuracies are coming from - MAF or injector. I usually start with the stock injectors, scale the MAF, then swap injectors and scale those.

Defining the map addresses is outside the scope of this course and is a specialised skill. If you want to learn about this process I'd suggest our WinOLS course, however we don't have a worked example on your vehicle so it may still be of limited use. I haven't personally tuned a 3G Eclipse as we never got these in New Zealand so I can't unfortunately offer much specific advice on the maps available. I imagine there are similarities to the EVO ECU logic but can't confirm that. You're correct that you'll need to extend the load axis to cope with more airflow/positive boost, but the open loop fuel table will then allow you to set an appropriate AFR target. Likewise for ignition. These early ECUs solely use MAF for load and didn't use a MAP sensor so the lack of a boost reference isn't an issue.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
